Best Pre Workout Without Caffeine (Great For Intermittent Fasting)

Why Finding The Best Pre Workout Without Caffeine Is Important

There are a lot of reasons why finding the best pre workout without caffeine is crucial.

Here are some of the more popular reasons why people seek out “stim free” pre workout supplements:

  • Some people don’t have time to workout in the mornings and drinking a caffeine-filled supplement won’t do them much good if they workout late afternoon or night. We ALL need good sleep!
  • Some people follow intermittent fasting. Intermittent fasters drink a ton of coffee. 2-4 cups of coffee plus a pre workout supplement is way TOO MUCH caffeine. More on this later.
  • Some people just drink a ton of coffee in general. The TOO MUCH caffeine problem arises again.

Any of these resonate with you?

Well if they do, then you’re in luck.

I believe that the best pre workout supplement I already take, just got even better for us caffeine lovers.

What is a stim free pre workout?

It’s any pre workout that doesn’t contain caffeine or any other stimulating ingredients.

You know, the ones that make you feel nauseous, jittery, or makes your stomach upset.

I used to take pre workout supplements that made me feel like my heart was going to explode out of my chest.

You don’t want that.

And that’s why stim free pre workout supplements were invented, among other reasons stated before.

What Replaces The Caffeine Then?

How is there a pre workout without caffeine? How?!

Before explaining it, let me show you with these two charts.

These two charts are two pre-workout supplements from the same company (Legion Athletics), but one has “stimulants” in them and one is stim-free.

STIM-FREE Pulse

“This stimulant-free version of PULSE increases strength and endurance, reduces fatigue, and sharpens mental focus…without the unwanted side effects or crash.”

Ingredients:

  • Citrulline Malate
  • Beta-Alanine
  • Betaine
  • Alpha-GPC
  • Caffeine
  • L-Theanine
  • L-Ornithine
  • Creatine

PULSE (Not Stim-Free)

PULSE is a 100% natural pre-workout that increases energy levels, improves mood, sharpens mental focus, boosts strength and endurance, and reduces fatigue.”

Ingredients:

  • Caffeine
  • L-Theanine
  • Citrulline Malate
  • Beta-Alanine
  • Betaine
  • L-Ornithine
  • Alpha-GPC
  • Creatine

Let’s talk about the ingredients quickly.

If you don’t much care, you can skip this section.

Just know that both are GREAT.

Just depends what situation you are in 😀

What Each Ingredient is used for

Caffeine

For obvious reasons, caffeine is not in the Stim-Free PULSE.

Caffeine is more than a pick-me-up.

According to research, caffeine:

  • increases the calories burned throughout the day, [1]
  • improves strength, promotes muscle endurance, [2]
  • and enhances anaerobic performance. [3]

So yes, that Starbucks you get every morning is more than just tasty.

L-Theanine

This ingredient works hand in hand with caffeine.

Without caffeine, it doesn’t do much. That’s why it’s not in the Stim-Free version.

In short, it helps reduce the mental and physical stress and improves focus, among other things.

If you want to learn more, you can do so by checking out the ingredients and FAQ section on this page.

L-Ornithine

According to the Legion FAQ section:

We removed L-ornithine and taurine to make a bit more room for a clinically effective dosage of Alpha-GPC, which is very expensive. We did this because we feel the benefits of Alpha-GPC outweigh the benefits of ornithine and taurine, and especially given the formulation and purpose of the product.”

In the next update to PULSE, they are going to remove this ingredient all together supposedly and replace it with Alpha-GPC.

If you want to learn more, you can do so by checking out the ingredients and FAQ section on this page.

Alpha-GPC

This is eventually going to replace L-ornithine. Legion’s site says the following about Alpha-GPC, as does research:

  • Increases power output, [4]
  • Mitigates cognitive decline as we age, [5]
  • and increases growth hormone levels. [6]

So there you have it.

The main ingredients that make the difference between the STIM-Free version and NOT STIM-Free version.

Why Stim-Free Pulse Great For Intermittent Fasting?

Don’t know what intermittent fasting is?

If you don’t know what intermittent fasting is, or what all the hoopla is about, check out my article here (4000+ shares).

It’ll explain everything.

For those of you who DO know what IF is, then you know we drink a TON of coffee throughout the morning.

Why?

To get through the fast.

You see, we fast for the first 4-6 hours upon waking (at least that’s how most do it).

To get through those 4-6 hours without food, we go drink ungodly amounts of black coffee.

Coffee is a natural appetite suppressant.

And it tastes so effing good…

Intermittent fasting in a nutshell.

However, what happens when you drink 2-4 cups of coffee, but find yourself having to workout in the late afternoon or night?

You can’t just go and take 2 full scoops of PULSE and go nuts (well you can, but not recommended).

Sure you’ll be fired up, but you’ll also be up till 4 AM.

If you know anything about fat loss or muscle growth, SLEEP IS IMPORTANT YALL[7][8][9][10]

What If I Drink Coffee All Day In General But DON’T Follow Intermittent Fasting?

Then Stim-Free PULSE will work for you too…

Stim-Free pre workout supplements in general are great for a lot of people.

If you go grab a cup (or 2, or 3, or 7) of coffee every morning at home or Starbucks, then, you’re already caffeinated enough.

Throwing 2 scoops of any GOOD pre-workout supplement, and you’ll be awake for 72 hours.

Plus, intaking too much caffeine has some cons.

Negatives of Intaking Too Much Caffeine Before Workouts

As with any good thing, there is something called diminishing returns.

If you drink coffee everyday, I guarantee 1 cup of coffee does almost NOTHING for you.

It may have before when you first started drinking coffee.

But now, you need 3 to even get the same effect. [11]

This is called diminishing returns.

Well, the same thing happens with Pre-Workout Supplements.

Does all pre workout have caffeine?

All good pre workouts have caffeine. Yes.

It should be the main ingredient in any pre-workout supplement that isn’t “stim-free.

So…

When Should You Not Take Pre Workout Supplements?

Here’s a chart of when you should and should not take pre-workout supplements (the ones that DO have caffeine).

Heavy Squat or Deadlift Workout

Normal Lifting Workout (Not Leg-focused) X X

Is it better to workout without pre workout?

Well, let’s look at the table above and answer both questions.

As the table shows, heavy deadlift and squat workouts usually require a LOT of energy and mental focus.

Studies show that caffeine-supplements are more effective for lower-body workouts than upper-body workouts. [12]

Throw in cardio afterwards and you’re going to be toast.

If you’re only doing cardio, you can, just make sure you’re not taking in too much caffeine already (habitually) or it won’t be as effective. [13][14]

These are a lot of rules to follow for NON caffeine-free pre workout supplements.

When Should You Not Take STIM-FREE Pre Workout Supplements?

Here’s a chart of when you should and should not take CAFFEINE-FREE pre-workout supplements.

See the difference?

It doesn’t matter when you take Stim-Free pre workout supplements.

At least when it comes to in-taking too much caffeine.
